Trade Adam Morrison -- if you can

If I were the Bobcats, I'd trade Adam Morrison if at all possible. Our excellent Bobcats' beat writer, Rick Bonnell, points out in this story that the reason the Bobcats picked up Morrison's option today might be to make him more attractive for a possible trade.

Morrison (left) is only 24, and he's just a couple of years out from being the No.3 overall pick in the NBA draft (Michael Jordan was the point man in that draft for Charlotte). I really thought Morrison be a better NBA player, but his defensive deficiencies hurt him. I don't think he'll be more than a 15-minute-a-game player in Charlotte for Larry Brown.

Morrison doesn't score nearly as easily as he did in college at Gonzaga, and so unless he's really on fire from outside, he's just not going to be out there on the floor for very long because of the defensive issues. He's a reserve on one of the worst teams in the NBA -- unless Brown has performed some magical transformation, that's what they are. And that doesn't say much for him. He's also basically a jump shooter on a roster loaded with them.

The problem is that Morrison has limited trade value. He missed all last season with a serious knee injury and, although he's playing on the knee now in the preseason, everyone will consider him damaged goods to some extent until they see that knee hold up for long stretches.

Still, if you can recoup a first-round draft pick for Morrison -- and I mean anywhere in the first round, not just a lottery pick -- I'd take it. If you can get a good big man to help the Bobcats with their rebounding problems, I'd take it. But if you're just giving him away, I wouldn't take that. He's not that bad. He's just not that good, either.

I was a great admirer of Morrison in college and remain an admirer of the way he balances his diabetes and his basketball career. But I don't think he's a great fit here anymore.

"He's a reserve on one of the worst teams in the NBA"?? Wow! I bet teams are just lining up to make that deal. A reserve player on a terrible NBA team for a first round pick or a good big man (because there are so many)...What a steal!!!!!

I agree with nohuiam.....

NO WAY Morrison should be traded.....give the man a chance! he was THE BEST PLAYER in college not 3 years ago.
He has had 3 different coaches in 3 years in the NBA and didn't even play due to a devastating injury.

I am his biggest fan so if they trade him I will think twice about the organization and definatley be getting a Morrison jersey from his new team.

Every year there are "great college players" that look like a waste of a roster spot in the NBA.

So the whole "he was the best college basketball player in the Nation three years ago" argument, doesn't hold any water.

And if you're really the type of fan that would cut bait with a team over trading a player that has never lived up to the hype, you're not a true fan of the team anyway.

Trade him, hell no! The guy needs time of the floor. Some columnists have even mentioned the likes of Carroll needing time on the floor to get into a rhythym. Morrison is a natural! He is an immediate scoring threat as sson as he steps on the floor. He has an unorthodox style of play. One of the few that understand the mid-range game. Defenders have to play him tight because of his ability to hit the three. He has the instincts to put the ball on the floor and get to the mid-range area, making the defender retreat and leaving Adam to knock down a quality jumper. Can you remember a mid-rage jumper that he has missed? The ability to do this is what made Larry Bird such an effective player...the ability to find the right spot on the floor for the open shot.

Yes, he does need to improve his defense. But did we so soon forget that Larry Brown is the coach. A coach that is emphatic about teaching young guys AND strives to teach them to be good defenders!

An the statement about trading him for a big man...stop putting so much value on big men that need 2-3 years to develop (E.g. Hollins and Frenchy). Sean May and Jared Dudley will help alleviate some of those concerns this year.

Trade him, and i am guessing most of the people here that are against the trade are caucasians...

I'm not ready to give up on him yet. His expectations were too high his rookie year, he didn't play last year, so give him this season to prove himself. And media, stop asking him about it, the last thing he needs is to be looking over his shoulder again

First round pick?!?! There is NO team in the league that would give that up for Adam.

Both him and Reddick were massively overrated by both the fans and the media desperate for an (American) white boy to flourish in college.

u dont see how you can say the media made these guys get the hype and made them overrated. JJ averaged 28 ppg and Morrison 27 or so on 2 of the best teams in college basketball. White or black you will be looked at as the 2 best players in college basketball if you put up those numbers on a top 10 team.

what a dumb column. the guy can play. if the bobcats trade him, that would be about as stupid as both this column and the author

I just read Morrison's reallly on the trading block. If he goes... There is NO chance I'll ever watch this team again. None. Zero. Zilch. I promise, I will never ever watch another Bobcats game or read a recap or check a boxscore again. Ever. I don't care if they win the Universe Championship on Uranus. I will never watch them again... If he was a mistake, then he's one they need to live with. Do NOT trade Morrison.
